Nature is a constant in Sabine Offerlind Thunberg's practice, as a source of visual inspiration and a full sensory experience. Walking familiar forest trails or into new territory is an artistic method: observing, feeling, gathering. She refers to this heightened awareness as "zooming in". The images and memories found in this state of openness and discovery are recalled in the studio, not to replicate them but to transform them into material experimentation and form. Moving again between macro and micro perspectives, what can be gathered from a close encounter with her sculptures?
There is no obvious beginning or end in the continuous pattern that builds or ruptures the surface,
There is no obvious beginning or end in the continuous pattern that builds or ruptures the surface,
a surface assembled or hollowed. And there is no certainty either in the materiality; paper, plaster or clay. Up close, they appear fibrous, chalky; from a distance, they read as geological matter or landscapes themselves.
It is in the ambiguous readings and unusual material encounters - a nest, seed, stone? Natural or artificial? - that Sabine is most interested; a playful and curious practice that invites the artist and viewer to (re)discover the world through attentive wandering and wonder.

Hallwylska Museet is craftsmanship on an epic scale. As a collective, there were a number of initial responses to this house as a site of inspiration as well as a location in which to present new work. The recurring thoughts circled around how we could find our way into the building, to relate and be in dialogue with the spectrum of identities the house has or is representative of; as a historical artefact, as a domestic space, as a life’s work, as a time capsule of wealth and taste…
One way we saw to do this was to see our work as a layer on top of the objects, now surfaces, that have been in place for decades.
